Welcome to a slightly more different blog post than usual, what you’re about to read here was originally just a bunch of DM’s I sent my friend fancy2209 when he asked me to flood his messages. Which I did by telling the tale of me going out to the city the day before, a long tale that documented my 4 hours spent out and about, and one that took me 6 hours to write fully to me bro as I was trying to make the narration sound entertaining.
Yet, I didn’t want this story to be remembered by only one person, I’ve got lots of friends (some who follow me on Neocities too) and I also just thought it would be fun to share this around online. So this is what you’re gonna read, the texts were edited as to make the narrative more consistent, maybe improving on some parts that I thought were sloppy and to just work well when read normally. I hope you like it, as much as I spent doing this :)
*NOTE: I told the tale to me friend on the 8th of July, it’s just that I’m finally putting this into the net around the 16th. Also this is gonna be a long read so grab a cuppa while you're at it.
So this adventure starts... Yesterday, right after exiting school, where I looked up, and surprisingly unlike the rest of the few weeks, the sky was clear and blue as all hell. For context, the few weeks have been just annoying cold, gray skies and at times strong fog, it almost felt like a silent hill game at times with how THICK the fog was. But today? Clear, Blue and hot; a perfect day to go out at.
And I pretty much wanted to go out since a few weeks ago I was busy doing stuff inside that didn’t let me go out, so I told myself "The next time the sky goes blue, will be the day I go out". So at 12:30, right after making my way home, I started getting ready for my travel, first I packed 2 books, firstly was a chronicles book and the second was a magazine about PC's from the 90's. I wanted to read those for the longest while but I always get distracted at home, so it was a perfect fit to read at the city's center.
Next up was 3 bottles of water, mostly because I knew that the walk was gonna be long, so why not bring in some water to help me stay hydrated?
Afterwards was a sweater in case things got cold during the end of the day, just because its hot in the day doesn’t mean that the night wont be cold! We still in winter anyways...
And then... I thought about the library in the center of the city, in the thing called "A casa da cultura" which is a thing that houses various pieces of brasilian culture, or at least cultura gaucha. There was a paint exhibition, the public library and a theater so plays could be done there. Its a very neat place honestly, next time I gotta explore more what it has to offer, but I focused on the library since I always wanted to visit a library, at least on my own time and see what it had to offer. I don’t really think you guys know this but I actually enjoy books! Their way of telling stories is so neat! And being a writer is something im interested in doing. I should probably start locking in regarding that and sharing some stuff here, sounds fun.
Getting back on track, now I had a target to go to. The public library. Decided to also take advantage of the libraries features to see if they had a book about Max Weber, he's this one dude we have to study in sociology, he made a book called a ética protestante or smt like that so maybe the library has that in their inventory, might as well bring a notebook and my pencil case so I can write notes, and maybe even some thoughts I got in my head.
So with that, I had my stuff ready in me backpack, a place to go. And wait I dont have a maps app… Well I do but its google maps, and that requires internet (google stinky too), but I have not internet, at least on my phone. And then I thought "Oh wait open street maps and open source software, those exist too".
I'll be brief with this part but I eventually downloaded an app called organic maps, it works offline, uses open street maps and has a way to track routes. Perfect for my needs. Truth be told that map apps became way more useful than I thought, and honestly was a godsend at times so if you ever need to go out and take a walk, download an offline maps app and remember your steps. It'll save you a lot of headache trust me.
So I pretty much had my setu- well, ok. Walking all the way to the center of the city,
hearing the annoying ass cars,
or hearing nothing at all,
sounds boring.
Thinking about something I could do to entertain myself on the walk, I looked at a set of headphones I had laying around. They were a gaming headset I borrowed from my brother, and it hit me… Music! Of course! That’s one piece of entertainment I could enjoy while still being able to pay attention to the street. And I had a pretty sizable amount music on my pc, so, I passed some music onto the phone that I could listen to while on the road. Green Day’s Dookie and American Idiot, the Gorillaz self-titled album and some crash music; Perfect music for travel (trust).
So with all that, I had my setup ready for a long walk. Before leaving I did some stuff at home, which as to not make this longer than it is (and because I don’t got any interesting narration) boils down to doing chores, and washing clothes on the washing machine; so after doing them chores and washing my clothes, THEN I actually went out, of course, while also telling me ma I was going out. Don’t want her to wonder why I disappeared all of the sudden.
So it was time for me to walk, and walk a lot. But not depressed about it like the Jesus of Suburbia, I still got a home.
While leaving my home, and with my headphones on. I put the music list on VLC to shuffle and started making my way out of the gate on our condo, Homecoming was playing in the moment and when the first movement finally starts, having all the instruments blast away with power as they leave the sad intro… Man that moment made me feel like I was on top of the world, like I could do whatever I wanted and that the few kilometers I had to walk to the library were nothing. It was really really fun, it almost felt as if my life had a soundtrack of its own! (Okay well I know I put on headphones and some music but still, felt really good).
So like that I walked confidently through the streets of me city, at first I was entering through traffic dense streets which makes sense since the roads close to my home have a lot of traffic. But the more I walked, I sorta noticed how it felt less as if the city was made for cars and that it was made for people.
This might be because the route I chose on organic maps used the humanitarian layer of open maps I think? Iirc that’s made to choose the best paths to walk as a person, not a car. And the best paths to walk it truly was, the streets were empty and sunny, it had a lot of nature throughout, not forest levels of course but there was a lot of green in whats usually very gray streets
But it wasn’t perfect, as good as the streets that the maps app chose, some of them looked very dirty and suspicious to be in, well only one stuck out to me, it was somewhat dirty, had a lot of graffiti’d walls and the whole street just felt very... Dangerous, idk why since that doesn’t really mean its dangerous in and of itself. But it’s still something to note.
Another thing, a lot of the paths seemed to go up and down and all around, mostly up. Even with the super flat paths I came around some of them you had to go through somewhat steep roads, hell even one of them had stairs, probably to facilitate going up of it. But, it wasn’t too bad, and after all a reason of why I did this was to train myself to not be a weak dude as I am currently.
Also, another con from organic maps is that the map didn’t seem to be super updated, and I’m not exactly expecting it to be ultra updated all the time but while walking, some streets didn’t seem to exist in the maps app. Some locations seemed out of date, for example, one of the turns I had to do was through a bbq shop, but the place changed names by the looks of it since there was a bbq place, but not the one named in organic maps.
Nonetheless, by using a bit of logic and double checking the map when possible, I still made my way through, and soon, with every step I took, the city seemed closer and closer to me.
Yeah nah ok I’m def on the city
Shoutouts to whoever drew Spongebob on this weird metal box thingy, you rock!
And for the time being, that’s where our story ends. It is currently 22:00 at the time I’m writing this (way before putting the text into html) and I still have 2 more parts to cover, I also wanted to take inspiration from me frend blur. He at times writes stuff that’s not yet finished, but while the days go by he adds more and more to the thing he’s writing. And I find that to be a really neat setup, so I’m going with that setup for the time being, plus, I’ll go out tomorrow which means I’ll have a chance to take more pictures of the city, so that’ll be fun! I’ll update this tomorrow, and see if I can put out part 2 while doing so. Cya!
